- From your PC's Desktop open Outlook Express.
Select the Tools menu, then click onto Accounts.
On the Internet Accounts page select the Mail tab and then click on your Account name e.g. mail.brookings.net so its highlighted.
Click on the Properties button to open the Account Properties window.
On the General tab the Name field should contain the name that you want to appear in your emails. For example Joe Bloggs, or Mr Joe Bloggs.
Check your Email address is okay. If you don't know what your email address is by default it is your User Name with @brookings.net or swiftel.net on the end. For example if your User Name is johndoe then your email address will be johndoe@brookings.net
Check your Reply address. In most cases this is the same as your email address. Click here for more details about how Reply addresses work.
Make sure that there is a tick in the option to Include this account when doing a full Send and Receive.
Once you are done on this page, click onto the Servers tab.
The Outgoing mail (SMTP) should read mail.brookings.net
The Incoming mail (POP3) should read mail.brookings.net
The option for Log on Using should be selected.
The Account name is your Swiftel User Name.
- The Password is your Swiftel Password.
Please remember case sensitivity with your username(should be all lowercase) and password. In other words we see USERNAME (all capitals) and username (all smalls) as two different User Names belonging to two different people. The same thing applies to your password. So you need to be exact in your typing.
- The Log on using Secure Password Authentication option should NOT be selected.
The My server requires authentication option should also NOT be selected.
Click onto the Connection tab.
If you connect using a dial up connection then the option to Connect using my phone line should be selected. If you have a DSL connection then the option to Connect using my local area network (LAN) should be selected.
- If you have the option to Connect using my phone line selected then select your Swiftel connection from the Use the following Dial Up Networking connection menu.
If you can't find any connection on the list then you'll need to run the Internet Connection Wizard. Cancel the Properties page and close Outlook Express, then please click here for instruction on how to run the Internet Connection Wizard.
- Select the Advanced page tab.
In the Server Ports area the Outgoing mail server(SMTP) port should be 25 and the Incoming mail (POP3) server port should be 110
You don't need to tick any of the SSL options.
If you are having problems downloading your email from the server then under the Server Timeouts heading drag the slider to the Long side.
In the Delivery area you can choose to leave a copy of your email on the Swiftel server. This is useful if you are downloading your email on someone else's PC and still want to keep your email in your mailbox to download later on another computer as well.
If you do choose to leave your email on the server then you also can select to remove the email from your Swiftel mailbox after a specified number of days or after you empty your Deleted Items folder in Outlook Express by ticking the relevant option.
Under the Sending heading you can choose to break apart large email messages into smaller chunks by selecting Break apart messages larger than xx KB, where xx is the number of Kilobytes.
Click the OK button to close the window. That should take us back to the Internet Accounts page.
- Click the Close button to close this page as well.
This should take us back to the main Outlook Express window. We need to check a few more settings manually.
- Click onto the Tools menu and select Options.
Click onto the Dial-up tab.
If you dial up to get your email then the Dial this connection option should be selected, with your Swiftel dialer selected in the menu. If you have a DSL connection then the Do not dial a connection option should be selected.
If you dial up to check your email then you can select the option for Outlook Express to Hang up when finished sending, receiving, or downloading.
- Click the OK button to close this window.
All done! Outlook Express should be set up for your email. Restart Outlook Express if you made any changes.
