- Open Outlook Express.
Open the Tools menu and select Accounts.
Select the Mail tab.
Click the Add button and select Mail.
The Your Name window opens.
Type in your name as you want it to appear in your email in the Display Name field.
Click the Next button.
The Internet E-mail Address window opens. In the E-mail address field type in your Xtra email address. For new users this is your User Name with @brookings.net after it.
Click the Next button.
The E-mail Server Names window opens.
Select POP3 from the My incoming mail server is a... drop down menu.
Type in mail.brookings.net in the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server field.
Type in mail.brookings.net in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server field.
Click the Next button.
The Internet Mail Logon window opens.
Select the Log on Using options.
Type in your User Name in the Account name. Do not type in your email address in this field.
Type in your password in the Password field.
Please check that the User Name (all lowercase) and the password that you type in are not in the wrong capitalisation because User Names and passwords are case sensitive. For example we see USERNAME (all upper case) and username (all lower case) as two different User Names and passwords. The password you type in shows up as a bunch of stars to keep it private.
Leave Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) unselected.
Click the Next button.
The Friendly Name window opens.
You can type in anything you like in the Internet mail account name field to describe your email account. By default the Internet mail account name is the same as your POP3 server. The Internet mail account name is used to tell multiple email accounts apart in Outlook Express.
Click the Next button.
The Choose Connection Type window opens.
If you have a dial up Internet connection then:
- Select the Connect using my phone line option.
or choose Local Area Network if your on DSL.
Once you have made a dial up connection you should open Outlook Express again and follow this guide to make a new mail account.
Click the Close button then restart Outlook Express.
The next time you open Outlook Express you will be prompted to select the connection you want to dial. Select your connection from the drop down menu and click OK.
Type in your User Name and password.
Select the Save password option if you don't want to type in your password each time you check your email.
- All done! You should now be able to send and receive your email with Outlook Express.
