Swiftel Communications DSL
F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is Swiftel DSL?

Swiftel DSL gives you high-speed Internet access over your ordinary telephone line. Using SDSL (Synchronous Digital Subscriber Line) technology, Swiftel DSL delivers Internet access at speeds much faster than a dial-up modem. With DSL, you can talk on the phone and surf the Web at the same time. There are no dial-up delays, busy signals, or disconnects, because you are always connected to the Internet.

What speed is available?

· Swiftel DSL gives you downstream and upstream speeds up to 512Kbps.
What are the downstream and upstream speeds?
· Downstream speed is the speed at which you can download data from the Internet. This is the speed at which you view information on the Internet, download pages or surf the Internet.
· Upstream speed is the speed at which you can upload data to the Internet. This is the speed at which you send e-mail or send a file.
In most cases, downstream speed is more important in the decision to purchase DSL than upstream speed. This is because you are likely to send files or e-mail less often than you view Web pages, receive e-mail, or download music or other files.

What do I get when I subscribe?

Your subscription provides you with the following benefits:
· High-speed, unlimited DSL access to the Internet
· Friendly Technical support at no charge
· The necessary hardware and software
· Up to 2 unique e-mail addresses
· 5MB of storage space for your personal Web site.

How does Swiftel DSL work?

Swiftel DSL splits your ordinary telephone line into 2 lines: one for your regular telephone service, and the other for high-speed DSL. You can talk on the phone while you are surfing the Internet at high speeds. If you have an answering machine or a fax machine connected to your telephone, you can continue to keep them connected.

What is the difference between Dial-Up access and DSL?

Speed and convenience. Most ordinary dial-up modems allow you to surf the Web at a maximum speed of 56Kbps (Kilo bits per second). Swiftel DSL provides speeds ranging from 256Kbps to 512Kbps. Swiftel DSL also provides you a constant connection to the Internet, so you don't have to dial-up, experience delays, or lose your connection as is common with a dial-up connection. Further, with Swiftel DSL you can surf the Web and talk on the phone at the same time.

Do I need to install another phone line to use DSL?

No. Swiftel DSL is installed on the same line you currently use for your telephone service. Swiftel DSL splits your ordinary telephone line into 2 lines, one for your regular telephone service and the other for high-speed DSL.

Will DSL affect the quality of my current telephone service?

No. With Swiftel DSL you can make phone calls while surfing the Web, and your phone reception is just as crisp and clear as always. Your phone will work even if your computer or the DSL modem is turned off.

Can I use my laptop with DSL service?

Yes, as long as it is connected to your DSL line via an available Ethernet port on the laptop. Your laptop will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Swiftel DSL.
